YESTERDAY'S MARKET RETROSPECTIVE
Friday’s session was a classic hot-payrolls reprice: NFP +162k (vs ~56k) lifted September hike odds toward ~58–60% and pushed the Dow (−0.51%) and S&P (−0.38%) lower, while the VIX only edged to 14.53 — rates did the damage, not panic.
How Yesterday Unfolded
Asia  Asia had already digested softer overnight cues into Friday; the Monday Sep 7 follow-through flipped to a growth read of the same NFP (Nikkei ~+2.1%, Kospi ~+4.6%) once the US holiday opened the gap.
Europe  Europe tracked the US rates shock into the Friday close with Stoxx/DAX soft into the holiday weekend as ECB hike certainty for Thursday also hung over duration-sensitive names.
US  US cash sold the hot NFP: S&P 7718.60 (−0.38%), Nasdaq −0.29%, Dow −0.51% with RUT +0.25%; discretionary (XLY −1.33%) and comms (XLC −1.19%) led the downside while XLK (+0.70%) was the rare sector green.
Capital Rotation
Discretionary/Comms (XLY −1.33%, XLC −1.19%) Tech/Industrials relative (XLK +0.70%, XLI +0.41%) · Yahoo SPDR 1-day: XLY −1.33% and XLC −1.19% vs XLK +0.70% on the hot-NFP Friday
Higher near-term rate odds hit long-duration consumer cyclicals hardest; megacap tech held up better than discretionary beta.
Health Care (XLV −1.04%) Utilities flat/defensive stub (XLU +0.12%) · XLV −1.04% vs XLU +0.12% on Friday
Defensive rotation was shallow — utilities barely green — confirming a rates reprice more than a full risk-off.
Key Drivers
Hot August nonfarm payrolls — Payrolls +162k vs ~56k consensus; unemployment held 4.1%; June/July revised higher — September hike odds jumped toward ~58–60%.
September FOMC hike reprice — 2-year yields pushed higher and equity multiples compressed without a VIX spike above 15.
Single-name earnings/guidance damage — Lululemon cut full-year forecasts and Adobe named an internal CEO — idiosyncratic hits inside a rates-led tape.
Bridge to Today
With US cash closed for Labor Day, the live tape is Asia’s growth read of NFP plus oil’s weekend tanker premium — Tuesday’s reopen will test whether CPI week re-anchors hike odds or fades them.
COMMODITIES OUTLOOK
Weekend US–Iran tanker strikes plus an OPEC+ hold for October keep Brent beta (BNO) and steel (SLX) as the cleanest commodity expressions; USO stays HOLD/no-add after a five-session climb.

Hot August payrolls (+162k vs ~56k) still set the tape into Labor Day: September Fed hike odds sit near ~58% with the 10-year at 4.784%. Equities closed Friday softer (S&P 7718.60 −0.38%, Dow −0.51%) even as VIX only 14.53 — a hike reprice without a vol spike. WTI ~$91.48 and gold ~$4477 keep an inflation/geo premium alive after weekend US–Iran tanker strikes. Watch Thursday’s ECB decision and Friday’s CPI (Sep 11) as the last major prints before the Sep 15–16 FOMC.
CONCEPT OF THE DAY
What contango means in the VIX (and futures) curve
Why today: Market Pulse’s sub-15 VIX and the cover playbook’s VIX/VIX3M contango read are the same idea: insurance is still cheap in time, even after a hot-NFP equity dip.
Contango is the normal shape of a futures curve when longer-dated contracts trade above the near-term price — you pay a premium to lock in exposure further out. In equity-vol space, contango means the 3-month VIX futures sit above spot VIX: the market is charging more for medium-term insurance than for the next 30 days, which is the calm, default state. The opposite — backwardation, when spot VIX exceeds longer-dated VIX — usually appears when traders are scrambling for protection right now, not next quarter. Contango is not a forecast that nothing can break; it is a statement about where the insurance market is pricing risk across time. For commodity ETFs that roll futures (oil, nat gas), persistent contango also creates roll yield drag that can make the ETF lag the spot headline. Next time this newsletter cites a VIX/VIX3M ratio below 1.0, read it as contango — calm term structure —…
